Macarena Gómez-Barris to Become the Inaugural Director of the Center for Environmental Humanities

The Department of Modern Culture and Media is excited to announce that Macarena Gómez-Barris, the Timothy C. Forbes and Anne S. Harrison University Professor of Modern Culture and Media, has been announced as the inaugural director of the Center Environmental Humanities at the Cogut Institute.

Since its establishment in 2017, Environmental Humanities at Brown (EHAB) initiative has worked to advance scholarship in the field of environmental humanities through multidisciplinary academic programming- engaging scholars here at Brown and beyond. The EHAB invites diverse methodologies in the humanities to grapple with important environmental questions of our time.

On July 1, 2024, the EHAB will officially become the Center for Environmental Humanities and will continue to build upon the momentum of rigorous and collaborative scholarship in this field.

“This new center is a tremendous development,” says Professor Gómez-Barris. “It builds upon Brown’s world-class reputation in the humanities and the collegial work of a community of scholars determined to contribute to the understanding of our local and planetary challenges and the collective reimagination of our world.”

Professor Gómez-Barris will continue in her role as Chair and Timothy C. Forbes and Anne S. Harrison University Professor of Modern Culture and Media, alongside this new opportunity.
