Professor Weheliye co-edits Thinking from Black: A Lexicon

As part of the Practicing Refusal Collective, Professor Weheliye co-edited “Thinking from Black: A Lexicon,” which was published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux in September. An expansive lexicon of words, terms, concepts, and ideas that takes the multiplicity of Black life as its point of departure. Thinking from Black: A Lexicon is an unusual reference book. Its contributors are visual artists, poets, dancers, historians, writers, architects, painters, theorists, activists, anthropologists, filmmakers, educators, and musicians. Professor Weheliye’s video essay, “Wiedervereinigung in Schwarz und Weiß,” about the co-existence of club culture and racist violence in early 1990’s Berlin, is included in the exhibition “Dancefloors after 1989.” The Berlin multimedia exhibition represents the upheaval, club culture, and the many stories behind the dance floors of reunification in Berlin and East Germany. They also delivered the 2026 Sylvia Wynter Lecture at King’s College London.
